Remote
Linux Access Directions
Fall 2023
Version
These directions explain how to
connect to the
class openSUSE image without using VMware Workstation Pro,
Workstation Player,
or Fusion.
Graphical
Environment Access
·
Download the class VPN zip
file from D2L Bright
Space.
·
Uncompress or extract the
class VPN zip file.
·
Inside the Macintosh folder
is the program Tunnelblick,
install Tunnelblick on your Macintosh.
o
Tunnelblick install
directions are found below.
o

·
Open Tunnelblick and
install the OpenVPN client
for Macintosh.
o
Tunnelblick OpenVPN install
directions are found
below.

Download and install
Microsoft Remote Desktop
o
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id1295203466?mt=12
·
Open the Tunnelblick
OpenVPN connect to the
class network at M State
o
https://tunnelblick.net/czUsing.html
·
Open the Microsoft Desktop
Connection
·
Within Microsoft Desktop
Connection open the
connection to openSUSE.mait.minnesota.edu
·
Login
o
Leave the environment as
Xvnc
o
Enter your login name for
the class Linux
machine
o
Enter your password for the
class Linux machine
·
You should now be using the
class Linux machine.
Note: Please logoff when you are done.
Other
options cause problems for other students.
Command
Line Access
·
Open the Tunnelblick
OpenVPN connect to the
class network at M State
o
https://tunnelblick.net/czUsing.html
·
Open the Macintosh terminal
and issue the
following command.
o
script data01.txt ssh loginname@opensuse.mait.minnesota.edu
o
You must replace loginname
with your login name.
o
You may replace data01 with
another name of your
choice.
·
Enter your Linux password.
The screen will not
echo anything during your password.
·
You should now be using the
class Linux machine.
The session is being recorded on your Macintosh in data01.txt.
·
The command “exit” will end
your session
properly.

Inside the Windows folder
is the OpenVPN client
install for Windows.

Install the OpenVPN client
for Windows
·
Open the Microsoft Desktop
Connection
·
Within Microsoft Desktop
Connection open the
connection to openSUSE.mait.minnesota.edu
·
Login
o
Leave the environment as
Xvnc
o
Enter your login name for
the class Linux
machine
o
Enter your password for the
class Linux machine
·
You should now be using the
class Linux machine.
Note: Please logoff when you are done.

network using the class
OpenVPN client.
·
Download Putty
o
https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html
o
Download putty.zip file.
o
Uncompress or extract the
putty.zip file.
o
Double click on the
putty.exe file.
o
Enter the following host .
§
OpenSUSE.mait.minnesota.edu
o
At login
§
Enter your class Linux
login name.
§
Enter your class Linux
password.
·
You should now be using the
class Linux machine.
o
You may configure putty to
log or record the session.
o
The command “exit” will end
your session properly.

Download the class VPN zip
file from D2L Bright
Space.

Uncompress or extract the
class VPN zip file.
·
You may need to install
additional options to
Network Manager or similar to utilize the OpenVPN client files.
·
You may need to install a
program on your Linux
system that will work the same as Microsoft Remote Desktop
Connection
·
Within Microsoft Desktop
Connection software or
similar open the connection to openSUSE.mait.minnesota.edu
·
Login
o
Leave the environment as
Xvnc
o
Enter your login name for
the class Linux
machine
o
Enter your password for the
class Linux machine
·
You should now be using the
class Linux machine.

You should now be using the
class Linux machine.
